Did You Know there is more than one American Sign Language?
Black American Sign Language (BASL) is a distinct dialect of American Sign Language (ASL) that originated due to the segregation of Black and White Deaf schools in the American South, leading to separate linguistic communities. BASL features a larger signing space, often using more two-handed signs, increased use of facial expressions, and unique vocabulary and grammatical structures that reflect Black culture and experience.
